The Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a three-year Contractually Limited Term Appointment (CLTA) in the area of Korean language. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream and is expected to begin on July 1, 2024, or shortly thereafter, and end on June 30, 2027. An additional two-year renewal may be possible.

Applicants must have earned at least a Master’s degree (a PhD is preferred) in Korean Language Education, Second/Foreign Language Acquisition, Second/Foreign Language Pedagogy, or a closely related area by the time of appointment, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. Native or near native fluency in Korean is expected together with an excellent command of English. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in curriculum development, lecture/tutorial preparation and delivery, including the development of online material/lectures, and teaching Korean as a second/foreign language in a degree granting program at the undergraduate level. Experience in teaching all levels of Korean, as well as organising extra-curricular activities is required. Familiarity with North American pedagogical approaches and experience in providing students with experiential learning opportunities are assets. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry, and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities in Korean language education. The successful candidate will teach courses in the Korean language at any assigned undergraduate level.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below) as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing. Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI), and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department of East Asian Studies is a multidisciplinary humanities department with established expertise in the histories, societies and cultures of East Asia. The department is home to an extremely popular undergraduate program and is strongly committed to graduate training. The department houses three in-demand language programs—Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. Language enrolments are growing and reflect the diverse populations that inhabit Canada. In addition, the University of Toronto’s global appeal attracts a large number of international students who participate in our language programs. Information about the department and the Korean language program can be found at www.eas.utoronto.ca.

All qualified candidates are invited to apply online by clicking the link below. Applicants must submit a cover letter; a current curriculum vitae; and a complete teaching dossier which includes a strong teaching statement, sample syllabi and course materials, teaching evaluations, and a (link to a) teaching demonstration video. Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. We seek candidates who value diversity and whose teaching and service bear out our commitment to equity. Candidates are therefore also asked to submit a 1-2 page statement of contributions to equity and diversity, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, or the mentoring of students from underrepresented groups.

Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references. The University of Toronto’s recruiting tool will automatically solicit and collect letters of reference from each referee the day after an application is submitted. Applicants remain responsible for ensuring that references submit recent letters (on letterhead, dated and signed) by the closing date. Two of the reference letters must primarily address the candidate’s teaching. More details on the automatic reference letter collection, including timelines, are available in the candidate FAQ.

Submission guidelines can be found at http://uoft.me/how-to-apply. Your CV and cover letter should be uploaded into the dedicated fields. Please combine additional application materials into one or two files in PDF/MS Word format. If you have any questions about this position, please contact Professor Janet Poole at eas.chair@utoronto.ca.

All application materials, including reference letters, must be received by December 4, 2023.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
